Hunan takes the lead: Xianglin Carbon Credits combined with zero-carbon fireworks to boost green economic development.
On the evening of November 22, a joint promotion event titled “Xianglin Carbon Credits + Zero-Carbon Fireworks,” jointly launched by the Changsha Municipal Forestry Bureau (host) and the Liuyang Municipal Forestry Bureau (organizer), in collaboration with Zhongnan Fireworks Company, was held at the Liuyang Sky Theater. This innovative initiative represents the first-ever integration of forestry carbon sinks with the fireworks industry across the province, creating a model that seamlessly blends the “beautiful economy” with “green development” and opening up a new pathway for transforming “lucid waters and lush mountains” into “mountains of gold and silver.”
This event attracted over 10,000 visitors from across the country. On each seat, neatly arranged were promotional gift bags for forestry carbon sinks, containing科普 booklets on Changsha’s forestry carbon sink program and Xianglin Carbon Credits. At the venue, a special promotional video titled “Xianglin Carbon Credits: A Green Savings Account for Lush Mountains” was also shown, explaining the meaning of Xianglin Carbon Credits: Through scientific measurement, the ecological value of forests—capturing carbon and releasing oxygen—is transformed into an officially certified, tradable, and pledgeable certificate.
Even more striking was the sight of over a hundred drones assembled on-site, forming the words “Xianglin Carbon Credits, Green Development” as they hovered steadily in the sky. The massive logo “Liu You Qing Shan” shone brilliantly and dazzlingly. Soon after, colorful fireworks burst into life, shooting upward into the sky and spewing forth一道道 beautiful rainbows, instantly transforming the world into a kaleidoscope of hues... From the audience seats came waves of exclamations: “It’s absolutely stunning!” Attendees at the scene unanimously agreed that this fusion of “carbon credits plus fireworks” was not merely a visual feast—it was also a vivid and engaging way to spread the green development ethos. Everyone had their eyes feasted, gained valuable knowledge, and broadened their horizons.
The combination of Xianglin carbon credits with fireworks essentially means that fireworks companies or event organizers can offset their carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits. The revenue generated from these transactions can be used to cultivate and improve the quality of forest resources, thereby supporting forestry ecological development, boosting the agricultural and forestry economies, and achieving an organic integration of ecological, economic, and social benefits.
It is understood that Changsha City boasts 9.47 million mu of forest land, with a total forest stock volume of 27.77 million cubic meters and a forest coverage rate of 49.21%, ranking fourth among all provincial capital cities nationwide and first among the six central provinces. To fully unlock the potential of forestry as a “carbon sink” and pave the way for the two-way conversion between ecological and economic benefits, Changsha has been vigorously promoting the development and trading of carbon sinks. Changsha took the lead in developing the first carbon credit forest area—3,163 mu—in the Liuyang Lake State-owned Forest Farm, with an initially verified emission reduction capacity of 24,000 tons (in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent) and a carbon sink value reaching 2.44 million yuan. In July of this year, Changsha’s first Xianglin carbon credit was issued and successfully traded in Liuyang, achieving an initial transaction worth 100,000 yuan. At the same time, Changsha issued the "Notice on Accelerating the Promotion of the Application and Trading of Changsha’s First Xianglin Carbon Credit," ensuring the continued deepening of applications such as "carbon credits + fireworks."
A relevant official from the Changsha Municipal Forestry Bureau stated: Forest carbon sink resources represent a valuable green asset. The development and trading of forest carbon sinks have truly transformed resources into assets and assets into capital, breaking the longstanding dilemma faced by forest farmers who find it difficult to monetize their “green mountains and clear waters.” This shift has fundamentally redefined the approach—from cutting trees to cherishing them, from selling timber to selling carbon credits. Moving forward, Changsha will continue to deepen its “Carbon Sink Plus” economy, expanding integrated development in areas such as “Carbon Credits Plus Cultural and Tourism,” “Carbon Credits Plus Sports,” “Carbon Credits Plus Industrial Parks,” and “Carbon Credits Plus Judicial Services.” We will actively create model green scenarios—including zero-carbon parks, zero-carbon government offices, zero-carbon events and competitions, and zero-carbon conferences—to foster a virtuous cycle between ecological conservation and economic development, thereby contributing Changsha’s strength to achieving the “dual carbon” goals and promoting high-quality development of the forestry sector.
